Lime Application Based on Soil pH

Soil acidity or pH is probably the single most important factor affecting the chemistry and biology of the soil. Low soil pH (acidic) is significant in a biological program in that it will limit microbial activity, nutrient availability and root growth. Low soil pH is one of the most common causes of lawns performing poorly that we see. To raise soil pH we apply limestone. If low soil pH is indicated on a soil test we will typically apply calcitic limestone (dolomitic lime if indicated) one to two times a year.
